Instagram Reels are here to stay and are a crucial part of any Instagram strategy whether you’re a creator or a business. The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently posted his tips and tricks for creating a winning reel. Here’s our take on it.

Don’t post reels with watermarks

Whether you’re editing in Capcut or cross-posting from TikTok, make sure you remove all watermarks before posting and don’t add logos. This can decrease reach. Instagram wants to keep you engaged with its app, so it makes sense that it doesn’t want to advertise other platforms inadvertently!

Keep reels under 3 minutes long

Instagram has been going through changes. One update announced recently was the introduction of 3-minute reels. Mosseri states that keeping reels under this time will help with reach. However, the sweet spot on how long your reels should be will depend on several factors, like the type of content you post and what your audience responds well to.

Music

A reel without music is like toast without butter or cookies without milk; it goes hand in hand. Ideally, a trending sound or audio will help to boost the visibility of your reel. But it doesn’t have to be. Get creative with your own music choices to create engaging content, like this example from Nike.

Post regularly

Consistency is key! Find a posting schedule that works for you and keep on top of it. Mosseri also mentioned that a recurring theme helps to bring people back to your page to engage and follow as they know what they’re getting from you.

Experiment

Trends come and go; what your audience likes now may change, and new content styles may work better for you. It’s all about experimentation. Most of what we learn on social media is through trial and error, so throw out the rule book and create something new. A good way to test the water is by using trial reels, which go out to those who don’t currently follow you. Within 24 hours, you’ll see results then it’s up to you whether you want to share with your current followers. Read more [here]

It may seem like a minefield out there, but it’s all about staying consistent, creative and connected. Ask yourself, what does my audience want to see?
