Social media management can look pretty straightforward from the outside.
A few posts appear each week. Thereβs a graphic, perhaps a photo or video, some carefully chosen words and a handful of hashtags.
But what you see on the feed is only a small part of what goes into managing a businessβs social media properly.
For businesses considering outsourcing their social media, understanding what actually happens behind the scenes can make it much easier to compare services β and understand what youβre paying for.
It starts with understanding your business
Before we write anything, we need to understand you.
What do you do? Who are your customers? What matters to them? What makes you different? Which services or products do you particularly want to promote?
Then thereβs your tone of voice.
Good social media management starts with learning the business behind the account.
Content planning
One of the biggest benefits of outsourcing social media is having somebody consistently thinking about what you should be talking about.
That means looking beyond simply filling spaces in a content calendar.
There might be new services to promote, recent projects to showcase, customer reviews to share, industry news to comment on, seasonal opportunities, events, awards, team updates or questions your customers regularly ask.
The aim is to create a useful mix of content that keeps the business visible without every post becoming a sales pitch.
Writing the content
Once we know what we’re talking about, somebody still has to find the right words.
Social media copy needs to be concise enough to hold attention but detailed enough to say something worthwhile.
It also needs to sound like the business.
For us, that means adapting the writing depending on the client, the audience and the platform. A LinkedIn post aimed at solicitors is going to need a very different approach to an Instagram post promoting a pet product.
That distinction matters.
Creating the visuals
The image, graphic or video accompanying a post can make just as much difference as the copy.
Social media management can therefore involve creating branded graphics, resizing images, editing photographs, producing simple videos or Reels and making sure everything feels consistent with the wider brand.
Sometimes the best visual is a professionally designed graphic. Sometimes it’s a quick photograph from the team.
Knowing when to use each is part of the process.
Scheduling β but staying flexible
Planning ahead makes social media far easier to manage consistently, but we don’t believe every post should be decided weeks in advance and then forgotten about.
Businesses change.
A great new project might land. Someone might send over a brilliant review. There could be an event, announcement or piece of industry news worth talking about.
A good content plan gives you structure while still leaving room to react when something more relevant comes along.
Different platforms need different approaches
Copying exactly the same post across LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram might save time, but it doesn’t always make the best use of each platform.
Audiences behave differently depending on where they are.
Sometimes a post needs a slightly different introduction. Sometimes it needs to be shorter. Sometimes the visual needs changing.
Part of managing social media is understanding those differences rather than treating every channel in exactly the same way.
Keeping everything moving
This is probably one of the least visible β but most valuable β parts of outsourced social media management.
Consistency.
When you’re running a business, client work naturally comes first. Social media is incredibly easy to push back until tomorrow, next week or when things calm down.
And sometimes they don’t.
Having somebody responsible for your social media means there is always someone thinking about the next piece of content, asking for that photograph, following up on an update or making sure your accounts don’t suddenly go quiet.
What are you really paying for?
You’re not simply paying someone to write a Facebook or LinkedIn post.
You’re paying for their time, creativity, marketing experience, understanding of your audience and, perhaps most importantly, their ability to keep your business visible while you’re busy running it.
Done properly, outsourced social media should feel less like handing your accounts over to an external supplier and more like adding another person to your marketing team.
At DWD Communications, that’s always been the approach we prefer.
We take the time to get to know our clients, their businesses and the people they’re trying to reach, so the content we create actually sounds like them.

How we can help
Marketing rarely fits neatly into one box.
A conversation about a new website can quickly become a conversation about SEO. A social media idea might need some design work. A new service might need website copy, a campaign, an email and a collection of sales materials to support it.
Thatβs why weβve built DWD Communications to cover a broad range of marketing disciplines.
We can take responsibility for one particular area or bring several services together, depending on what your business needs.
Some clients need an agency. Others just need a marketing team.
Experience within B2B and B2C environments
Our clients operate in very different worlds.
We work with professional services businesses speaking to specialist B2B audiences, alongside consumer-facing brands where the message, channels and buying journey can look completely different.
That variety is something we enjoy.
It means weβre used to adapting the way we think and communicate rather than applying the same marketing formula to every client.
We have particular experience within sectors including legal and probate, property, healthcare, hospitality, professional services and retail, while our broader marketing experience allows us to work comfortably with businesses in many other industries too.
